my old 94 jetta was rusting:
where the door handles touched the body
around the rear license plate
rocker panels (penetrated one)
jacking points
middles of the door panels (splotches about 3-4" diameter)
windshield mounting surface
the strip that runs above the bumper and below the headlights
anywhere i looked at it funny
when i did my heater core replacement i had the windshield replaced. the
guy pulled it out and said that they wouldn't be able to honor any part of
the glass warranty until the rust was taken care of. the removed windshild
layered like this: glass, old adhesive, a thin layer of my car's steel. on
a black car, the entire mounting flange that the windshield sits on was
orange and flaking away. it took hours of work with a metal brush, shopvac,
and rust treatment before it was remotely safe.
fwiw, one of the reasons i bought the audi was the galvanized steel. my
hood was dented when i bought it and bare metal is exposed. after two
michigan winters (most salt per hwy lane mile in the us!) the spots are
still a cool zinc color.
