I just wanted other peoples "problem" areas they have
with rust? Or do you not have a rusty car!

Mine (1997 VR6) has come through and been touched up
on the following locations;

-rear boot lid, just above the plastic handle/strip
-A couple of the lip edges in the wheel arches

Apart from the above, very good for cars age and in
crappy wet England.

My 1997 GLX is experiencing "road cancer" ONLY on the passenger side.:
-Bottom of front quarter panel just behind wheel weel. It is actually
peeling
-Bottom of rear quarter panel just in front of wheel weel, and a bit at the
on the inside @ the top of the wheel well

My '95 has only developed spots where the paint has been chipped.

Given the seemingly random UK weather cycling, it's aged well.

The only non damage related corrosion I've found is inside the plastic
sill strips, which you can just pop off to replace.

George.

my old 94 jetta was rusting:
where the door handles touched the body
around the rear license plate
rocker panels (penetrated one)
jacking points
middles of the door panels (splotches about 3-4" diameter)
windshield mounting surface
the strip that runs above the bumper and below the headlights
anywhere i looked at it funny

when i did my heater core replacement i had the windshield replaced. the
guy pulled it out and said that they wouldn't be able to honor any part of
the glass warranty until the rust was taken care of. the removed windshild
layered like this: glass, old adhesive, a thin layer of my car's steel. on
a black car, the entire mounting flange that the windshield sits on was
orange and flaking away. it took hours of work with a metal brush, shopvac,
and rust treatment before it was remotely safe.

fwiw, one of the reasons i bought the audi was the galvanized steel. my
hood was dented when i bought it and bare metal is exposed. after two
michigan winters (most salt per hwy lane mile in the us!) the spots are
still a cool zinc color.

never buying a daily driver that isn't constructed of double side dipped
galvanized steel again edition.

I have some bubbles at the seam where the sill meets the lower end of
the a-pillar on both sides, and a spot on the b-pillar below the rear
door hinge on the driver's side. On the outside I have some on the
wheel well behind the plastic trim. Lastly, the plastic trim strip is a
weird one. I guess it has a metal backing and there developed a small
crack in the plastic which caused the metal backing to rust below the
rear door on the driver's side.

This is on a 98 Jetta GLX from New England. Had some accidents on that
side so I suspect that is the reason for the rust bubbles.

My '95 Jetta GLX VR6 has some rust appearing around the plastic around the rear number-plate, as another lister mentioned, I've had to replace one of the silly black sill-strips as the metal strip inside disintegrated and the FUBA antennae also rotted away.

There's rust finally coming thropugh the bare patch on the bonnet/hood, but that was where my motor-bike hit it with it's clutch lever when it fell over! Two vehicles in a (minor) accident and I owned both of 'em, damn!

Alan, in Chicago-land.

After this last winter, witch seemingly lasted 7
months, I've spotted about 4 spots on the wheel
arches, and a bubble that rusted through on the rear
driver quarter. 97' here also, so it seems pretty
typical.
