Actually, 3M makes a variety of industrial strength tapes. I'm not talking
about the mild kind you buy at Orchard Supply or Ace Hardware. 3M makes
really scary stuff that if used improperly, can cause some disastrous
results. I have all the specs on their line of tapes and adhesive transfer
tapes, if anyone wants info.

To put on body trim/skirts/etc., I recommend using 3M VHB (very high bond)
Double Coated Acrylic Foam tape. Specifically, number 4930. It has a normal
tensile strength of 160psi, a static shear strength of 1500psi @72degF.
Dynamic shear is 100psi @ room temp. Temp tolerance up to 300degF short
term/ 200degF long term. Solvent resistant, moisture resistant. Dwell time
(the time it takes for 100% ultimate bond strength to occur) is 72 hours.
UV resistant too!

This tape simply has it all. Disclaimer, if you put it on out of position
and rub it down with pressure, good luck removing it. The work part (trim
piece) will be destroyed in the removal process, or mangled beyond repair.
This tape is typically used to replace spot welds and rivets. I've used it
to replace 10-32 UNF SST cap screws in a certain project I was working on.
No failures yet.

P.S.
In the Todd spirit, pop quiz: who knows what "3M" stands for?

The thickness of the 3M VHB #4930 tape is .025" or .64mm. In other words,
relatively thin for double sided tape.

For any one with this still as an issue you can use 3m super strength double
sided stick tape and not the # 4930 one. I tried to look for it but was
unable to locate it so I used the double sided tape marked super strength and
just cleaned the surface first with goof off. The package says weather
resistant from -20 to 200 degrees F.

just an fyi( for your info)

I know that you probably know this butt let me repeat some of the key
points to doing this correctly. The key is to get some bird and tar
remover or some sort of strong cleaner and remove the crap from the
molding itself as well as on the door. Do it a couple of times to make
sure that all of the soot and dirt is gone. Next completely adhere to
the molding a strip that is as long as the area which is not sticking.
In other words cut it as long as the section falling off. Lastly press
firmly in all areas and hold it for at least 1 minute in each of the key
areas. That is it and it worked on my 1995. Make sure it is Scotch 3m
super strength mounting tape cat. NO. 316 from home depot with a red
case. It says intended for permanent use on glass metal and sealed
wood.

Well, dip me and call me stinky! Just did a seacrh on Snap.com
(www.snap.com, kick-@ss search engine!) and found this:

	http://users.cwnet.com/~thall/fasteners.htm

They have the 3M 4930 VHB (very high bond) tape. And I quote:
"The price is approx. $73.25 for a 72 yard roll, plus shipping
  and tax." Ack!

Oh, yeah I have an idea: if and when we have the GTI Club of
North America, one of the freebies that a new member gets can
  be two yards of 3M 4930 VHB (0.5 x |-).

Does anyone have a good source for the 3M VHB tape. McMaster Carr
sells it for $74 for 72 yds. of 1/2 inch. This seems to be awful expensive
for double stick tape.

For those of you needing the 3 M VHB tape, I bought a roll last year at
about $1.50 a yard. I used this on my 95 side molding and its still tight
thru heat of summer and cold of winter. The tape has been kept sealed in
freezer bags and since I hope not to have to use the remainin 65 or so yrds
can offer some for a reasonable price. In most cases you don't need a full
roll. If you do its time to trade the car.

Well, my door trim finally started to come loose. Thought that after 8+
years, I was going to be able to avoid that "feature", guess NOT!
Looking through the library, I found the references to the 3M VHB 4930
tape only being available in 72 yd. rolls at an absurd price ($84.20 as
of today). Well, that has changed
- McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) has it in 5 yd. rolls for $18.58/roll
  (p/n 75935A14) - still more than
necessary, but much easier on the wallet. Might be time to update the
library . . . . :-)
                                                                                                              Later,
