Actually, 3M makes a variety of industrial strength tapes. I'm not talking
about the mild kind you buy at Orchard Supply or Ace Hardware. 3M makes
really scary stuff that if used improperly, can cause some disastrous
results. I have all the specs on their line of tapes and adhesive transfer
tapes, if anyone wants info.
To put on body trim/skirts/etc., I recommend using 3M VHB (very high bond)
Double Coated Acrylic Foam tape. Specifically, number 4930. It has a normal
tensile strength of 160psi, a static shear strength of 1500psi @72degF.
Dynamic shear is 100psi @ room temp. Temp tolerance up to 300degF short
term/ 200degF long term. Solvent resistant, moisture resistant. Dwell time
(the time it takes for 100% ultimate bond strength to occur) is 72 hours.
UV resistant too!
This tape simply has it all. Disclaimer, if you put it on out of position
and rub it down with pressure, good luck removing it. The work part (trim
piece) will be destroyed in the removal process, or mangled beyond repair.
This tape is typically used to replace spot welds and rivets. I've used it
to replace 10-32 UNF SST cap screws in a certain project I was working on.
No failures yet.

In the Todd spirit, pop quiz: who knows what "3M" stands for?
