The refrigerant in our cars is supposed to last 25 years if there isn't a leak. If you were out of refrigerant you would never get any cold air at all. Mine comes on when the car heats up and the secondary fan comes on. When you turn on the air conditioning the secondary fan is supposed to immediately come on at low speed. Mine does not. There are some procedures in the Bentley manual to test the fans, all of mine tested ok. I asked my VW mechanic about it and he said there's a controller for the AC somewhere by the canister in the front on the passenger side. I haven't checked it out yet. It's been really hot lately and I need AC. If you figure anything out please let me know. The lights in the car started blinking out just for a sec, and the radio would turn off and back on as well. It took three times to start it yesterday morning, so I dropped it off at the dealer on the way in (I hate doing it, but there's not a reputable VW shop near where I work). They called near the end of the day sayign they had fixed both problems. I was quite annoyed at myself when the work order said: "Tightened loose battery cable, replaced 20 AMP fuse" Ugh. So go check your 20 AMP fuses, I think that was the cause of the AC problem. The loose battery cable thing makes me want to kick my own ass. Information about the module you're talking about can be found in the library under, "Air Conditioning/Heating" -> "Debugging the A/C". M. The Air coming out is Icy cold. I tested the brown sensor on the thermostat housing by jumping the wires and it works. All my fuses look good, unless there is one somewhere in the engine compartment I can't find. I know where the pressure switch is. I'll try testing it, but I don't see how that could cause what's going on. Can anybody think of something else to try? I know there are a couple in the engine compartment right up near the coolant tank (on my '98 they're under a little clear piece of plastic). It sounds exactly like the problem I had. M. The one on the left was a 5 amp and the one on the right is a 10 amp. I didn't have a 5 amp fuse so I put in a 10 amp one. My air conditioning still didn't work so I didn't think it was related. I never thought to look at the fuse again. I just checked it and the 10 amp was blown. I put in a 15 amp and voila, it works! I won't get a chance till after work to give it the long haul test. I was wondering; what size fuse does everybody else have? Thanks for the help Darryl 97 GTI-VR6
