Hey guys,
I have the same heater core problem as I have been reading so much
about on the list. I am currently on deployment and im goin to be state
side for about 2 1/2 weeks. I want to fix my GTI while im back but I don't
have time or money to replace the whole heater core. I read something about
bypassing it using PVC pipe. If any of you have done this it would be great
help. Since I am in a crunch for time I'm trying to get all the information
together before I get back. Anyone know: What size does the PVC pipe need
to be in diameter and length? What type of clamps should I use to secure
the hose to the pipe? Do I also need elbows on the end of the pipe to make
it fit? Which sealant should be used on the pipe joints if I do need
elbows? I know that's a lot of questions but I don't really have a choice
right now. It's either fix it or get a rental and that's not affordable or
likely. Any help, recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Man in a hurry,

Jonathan

Yes, you can bypass the heater core by installing a piece of
pipe into the hoses, the hoses are located in the engine bay
towards the rear center of the car, you will see them going
thru the firewall, i believe they are 5/8" or 3/4", put some
clamps on them and you will be ok, make sure they dont leak.

I don't have any specific info, but I just want to point out that you
*probably* don't want to use PVC pipes. Instead use flexible rubber
hose. Home Depot for example, have thick black rubber hose that is
classified to be inert to gasoline. The main point is, use something
that's _flexible_, not rigid like PVC pipes.

As for fittings, there are barbed brass fittings for said rubber hose,
but I'm not sure if glycol will corrode brass or not.
