Hello all:
In my continuing saga of delivery defects, I ran across some interesting
info. For reasons I with which I won't bother you, my '97 had to have
the instrument cluster replaced. The replacement unit had an extra ABS
light which lit up where the airbag light should be, and had the airbag
light where the fuel light should be. According to the service manager
at my dealer (who was doing some *serious* ass-kissing, I might add), VW
has been having problems with the instrument lights (the ones that light
the gauges) melting the housing as a result of the DRL's keeping them
lit all of the time. Apparently, there may be a TSB for this and VW is
transitioning these cars over to '96 and later plastics, which are
supposedly heat-tolerant. So if you have a '95 and your gauges are
melting, go see the dealer.
In any case, they are finally apparently getting the car all squared
away, two months after purchase, and after firing the bonehead who was
not working up to snuff. They're keeping the car overnight so that the
service manager can personally approve the repair work. Here's hoping
the car will be better than new after tomorrow.
